Windows 10: critical gaps in HEVC extension - with fix from microsoft store

Anyone who has downloaded the HEVC extension from the Microsoft Store should update the add-on to the new version as quickly as possible. In a previous variant, two security holes have been discovered by Microsoft.

In order to be able to play media files via apps encoded in the H.265 standard on Windows 10, there is the HEVC extension in the Microsoft Store. After the download, the internal Windows codec library is expanded accordingly to include the successor to the H.264 codec. As Microsoft reports, two vulnerabilities called CVE-2020-1425 and CVE-2020-1457 have been discovered. Attackers could use these two leaks to get information about the attacked system or to execute malicious code.

Updating via Microsoft Store should close security gaps
Microsoft has already provided a fix for both vulnerabilities. The HEVC addon is patched to the current version within the Microsoft Store . If you haven’t downloaded the paid extension yourself, you may also have HEVC, as the video extension is installed ex works by some device manufacturers. Either way, Microsoft recommends downloading the new version free of charge from the Microsoft Store. The update should also be delivered automatically on affected PCs. If you want, you can also search for the update manually by clicking on the menu with three dots in the Microsoft Store app and then selecting Downloads & Updates. Updates can then be called up here.

High Efficiency Video Coding or H.265, as the codec standard is synonymous, is a compression standard that reduces the storage space even more than the predecessor H.264. The use of H.265 reduces the storage space requirement, especially for videos in UHD or with even higher resolution moving images. With some videos and resolutions, compression is improved by 25 percent while maintaining image quality compared to H.264.
