South Korean manufacturer SK Hynix is also gearing up for mass production of DDR5 RAM chips . The start is planned this year, although it is not yet specified exactly when the finished modules will enter the market.
It is stated that DDR5 can offer more than twice as much bandwidth as compared to DDR4, which is important for AI systems and machine learning technologies. It is stated that the new memory will become more capacious and more secure than DDR4.
As noted, the minimum frequency for DDR5 according to the specification will be 3200 MHz, but the manufacturer plans to start from 4800 MHz and bring it to 8400 MHz. And the minimum density of one DDR5 chip is 8 Gb. The maximum is 64 Gbps, which is four times higher than that of DDR4.
A reduction in operating voltage is also claimed. If the “four” used 1.2 V, then the “five” will work at 1.1 V. This will make the new memory more economical and cold with other improved characteristics. As a result, power consumption will drop by 20%.
Of course, processors and motherboards with support for such memory should also appear, therefore, it is worth waiting for the full release of new memory to the market no earlier than 2021.
