Research contact lenses do not increase the risk of infection with COVID-19

Scientists have created a cheap laser eye protection system

Eyes are one of the main routes of transmission of the virus, including SARS-CoV-2, the causative agent of COVID-19. In recent weeksseveral reprints of articles appeared (i.e.articles that have not been peer-reviewed by other scholars – Note. Ed.) that contact lenses increase the risk of infection with a new type of coronavirus.

In their publication, researchers note thatthis is not so: now there is no scientific evidence that contact lenses increase the risk of contracting a viral disease compared to wearing glasses.

Our results show that contact lensesremain a perfectly acceptable form of vision correction during a coronavirus pandemic if people follow hand hygiene rules and follow appropriate personal care guidelines. Unfortunately, in recent days we have seen several erroneous messages about contact lenses and glasses. Our goal is to provide understanding and dissemination of truths based on scientific evidence.

Lyndon Jones, lead author of the study

The authors of the work note that ordinary glasses cannot protect the owner from infection with a new type of coronavirus.

Now in 185 countries of the world there are more1.85 million cases of infection with this infection. Eight countries account for 80% of all cases – the USA, Spain, Italy, France, Germany, Great Britain, China and Iran. At the same time, in China, where the virus came from, there is a significant reduction in the epidemic. Since the end of 2019, 114 thousand people have died from coronavirus infection, more than 430 thousand people have been cured. In Russia, there are a total of 18,328 patients with coronavirus infection, 148 patients died, 1,470 – were cured.
