Remedy Can Vitamin C Protect Against Coronavirus

Vitamin C is not able to cure a viral infection, but it cannot be called completely useless.

Vitamin C is a simple remedy that, according to some, can cure a common cold or flu. But although this vitamin actually helps maintain a healthy immune system, there is insufficient evidence that it can prevent or significantly alleviate ARVI. Nevertheless, at the height of the outbreak of the new coronavirus, some popular bloggers claim that taking megadoses of ascorbic acid cures COVID-19, a disease caused by the new coronavirus.

Let’s get right to the point. Can Vitamin C beat COVID-19? Given that this virus belongs to the same family of coronaviruses as conventional SARS, it is unlikely that it can protect or cure you of this infection.

The idea of using vitamin C to treat common colds has been popularized by Linus Pauling, a chemist, and two Nobel Prize laureates. Then it was picked up by manufacturers of dietary supplements. Unfortunately, over the half-century that has passed since then, Pauling’s statement has not been able to be supported by convincing evidence.

Vitamins were discovered at the beginning of the 20th century – these are substances in a small amount contained in food and vital to our body. People who do not get enough of these or those vitamins develop the corresponding diseases. For example, a lack of vitamin C causes scurvy. It was possible to find out only in the 1930s, then it became clear that taking ascorbic acid can cure this disease.

The discovery of vitamins gave rise to a whole science – nutrition. Over time, it has become a competitive, unregulated industry, where scientific facts are often forced to confront misinformation spread for profit. A new outbreak of coronavirus is just the latest example.

In this case, false information is transmitted extremely quickly. Apparently, it was precisely such publications that caused the lack of vitamin C in Asia and a five-fold jump in demand for ascorbic acid and multivitamins in Singapore.

Body immunity

Vitamin C is involved in redox reactions in the tissues of our body. These are reactions in which cells interact with oxygen, and they play a key role in many processes, for example, the production of energy in cells. However, during the same reactions, products harmful to human cells can form – for example, reactive oxygen species that react with lipids ( fats), proteins, and nucleic acids. Vitamin C can minimize these harmful reactions. It also contributes to the production of collagen necessary for supporting the tissues of our body.

And although ascorbic acid does not have wonderful healing properties, some studies have shown that it helps the immune system fight bacteria and viruses. Its role in protecting against infections has been confirmed by a recent review study. It showed that immune cells need vitamin C to produce proteins that activate the immune system to fight viruses.

At the same time, we can easily get the necessary amount of vitamin C with food – and thereby maintain the full functioning of the immune system. Vitamin C is found in abundance in many fruits and vegetables, including oranges, broccoli, and potatoes. Although it is relatively non-toxic, as its high solubility allows it to be easily excreted, excessive doses can lead to unpleasant symptoms such as diarrhea, nausea, and cramps.

But, although I said that vitamin C can hardly be called a radical remedy from COVID-19, to say that it is completely useless would be wrong – given the role that it plays in the work of the immune system. And although a review study showed that this vitamin does not reduce the frequency of acute respiratory viral infections, according to the same study, it can slightly reduce the duration of symptoms. And in people whose activity is associated with short periods of intense physical activity ( for example, marathon runners and skiers), vitamin C halves the duration and severity of colds.

This mild effect of vitamin C on coronaviruses, which cause common colds, prompted a new clinical study. His goal is to find out if COVID-19 can be defeated with very high intravenous doses of vitamin C. The study has just begun, and there are no results yet. Intravenous administration of vitamin C will increase its content in the blood much faster and more significantly than any supplements taken orally – it is expected that this approach can enhance the weak protective effect. But while this is just a hypothesis, in addition, intravenous administration is associated with a number of own risks, such as infection, damage to blood vessels and others.

So far, despite the fact that vitamin C can slightly affect the common cold, it seems unlikely that megadoses of ascorbic acid can cure COVID-19 or at least somehow affect the course of the disease. Even if the intravenous administration of vitamin C has a positive effect, it is likely to be a temporary solution until the moment when more reliable means of combating the virus, such as vaccinations, appear. In the meantime, washing the hands remains the most effective way to avoid infection – and be careful not to touch the eyes, nose, and mouth and keep your distance from those who show symptoms of the disease.
