Tesla has the policy of replacing the media control units, briefly computers and autopilot equipment in the old cars of its customers with newly produced equipment. New computers bring along features such as autopilot , as well as many bug fixes .

According to the findings reached by the ethical hacker “GreenTheOnly” , Tesla does not make much effort to protect the personal information of users on these computers. GreenTheOnly said that former users of the four Tesla media controllers purchased from eBay reached many personal information, including passwords and location information .

In his interview with InsideEVs , Green stated that all the modules he bought included cookies for services such as Netflix and Spotify , along with his former owner’s home and workplace location, registered Wi-Fi passwords, logins to their calendars, call lists and address books from their phones . These cookies allow hackers to access the account.

Therefore, the personal information of users who have recently upgraded the Tesla car’s computer hardware may be sold on eBay as of now.

“On eBay, the prices of these units fell from $ 500 to $ 150, and people started buying them for research. It is not possible to use these parts in other cars, so they do not work much in repairs. People sent me a few units to extract data for research, and I noticed this data leak there. I bought one myself to check its accuracy, and I really realized that there was such a leak. ” Green explains how he reached his findings with his words and suggests users to change their passwords urgently.

Green states that he had contacted Tesla a week before he released his findings to the press and asked what kind of protocol was followed for these computers by showing his data. However, there is no explanation or feedback from the company so far .

Green also found a vulnerability in Tesla in March 2019. In this vulnerability, users could return to factory settings to resolve the vulnerability, but this time the solution does not seem so easy.
