Older Ryzens on B550 motherboard: Apparently it works, but always?

AMD’s new B550 “chipset” officially only supports Ryzen 3000 processors and the subsequent generation, older processors based on Zen and Zen + no longer. Screenshots created in connection with an Asus board now show that at least Zen + is still supported. But should you rely on it?

Older Ryzens on B550 motherboard: Apparently it works, but always?

Officially, the AMD B550 I / O hub only supports the Ryzen 3000 series. The chips should also be ready for the coming generation in the form of the Ryzen 4000. In the opposite direction, however, compatibility is poor, as a look at the manufacturer’s support list shows . Zen and Zen + are no longer officially supported, which is a bit surprising, especially with regard to the Ryzen 3000G series. Finally, the APUs appear to be generation-delayed, so despite the 3000 label, they are still based on Zen + instead of Zen2, but are a current product. Now CPU-Z screenshots suggest that Zen + still works with the new “chipsets”.

B550 and Zen +: Probably not generally applicable
They show a Ryzen 5 3400G, a Zen + -based APU, in use on an Asus TUF Gaming B550M-Plus. Even more: a Ryzen 5 2600X, again Zen +, could also be put into operation. The BIOS version 0608 from June 15th, 2020 is displayed. If you call up the change log for this BIOS version, there is no indication of subsequent CPU support. The list of supported CPUs also does not name any of the apparently executable processors – only Zen2 CPUs appear.

Momomo_US is now also providing examples for an MSI-B550 board . The screenshots show an MSI MAG 550 in use with even older CPUs: Summit Ridge aka Zen in the form of a Ryzen 5 1600 and Raven Ridge in the form of the Ryzen 3 2200G Older Ryzens on B550 motherboard.

Upgraders who already have a new mainboard in mind but would like to continue using their CPU should be cautiously optimistic. There is no evidence that older processors are supported by the bank. It is quite possible that other motherboards with a Ryzen 5 2600X will also have no problems. However, you should not count on it. Perhaps it is actually the same as AMD, how mainboard providers handle older CPUs. Ryzen 4000 should n’t run with B450 boards anymore . However, the half-year incompatibility between Ryzen 1000 and X570 already showed that one cannot necessarily hope for broader support Older Ryzens on B550 motherboard.
