New World Hands-On With Amazon’s Open-World MMORPG

In a recent video diary, the MMORPG New World developers at Amazon Game Studios focused on a combat system that promises to be flexible and diverse.

Unlike the classic MMORPGs, in New World the combat system gravitates towards a full-fledged action – a large role in battles is played by the choice of position, evasion and blocking attacks. Therefore, the outcome of the battle depends not only on the characteristics and equipment of the character but also on your skill.

Each type of weapon has its own skill tree. The more you use a particular tool, the more you level it up, which opens up new abilities and bonuses.

In addition, weapons can be used in different ways. For example, a tomahawk is suitable for both close combat and long-range combat – it can be thrown at the enemy. Playing with a sword and shield, you are free to determine the leveling path, choosing attacking or defensive “skills”.

Your style of play depends on the equipment. So, putting on heavy armor and picking up a shield, you will take on the role of a tank, and light robes are perfect for a clever shooter. Moreover, no one will forbid at any moment to freely change things, adapting to the situation.

A huge role is played by magic, which in the New World can be used by any player. True, its effectiveness still depends on how many points you put in intelligence and concentration.

You can also try out combat systems in PvP, where you can arrange duels, group clashes, and even battles of entire armies. Joining one of the fractions, you can optionally enable PvP mode, without which other players will not touch you. The authors call the top of the PvP massacre the battle for the territory in the format of 50 to 50 – we wrote about them in this news.

The release of the New World will take place on Steam in May 2020.
