New Pokémon Snap the pocket monsters are now more charming than ever Full Detail

Follow a marked loop through fine environments, point the camera correctly and shoot Pokémon on a conveyor belt. It’s limited, repetitive – and strangely entertaining.

From role-playing and pinball games to pedometer games and puzzles. That there is an absurd amount of Pokémon games would have to say against; as many as 122 pieces according to a total non-fact-reviewed googling. However, one of them stands out extra: Pokémon Snap which was released for Nintendo 64. Despite being liked by both players and critics, there was never a sequel that built on the concept. Until now. After 22 years, we finally get a sequel to the Nintendo 64 classic Pokémon Snap.

Tourists on photo safari

For anyone who has played the original, New Pokémon Snap will feel familiar right away. The player travels along a predetermined distance and must take pictures of Pokémon. It’s not harder than that. At first, you can only photograph the Pokémon lulling around you. Some stand, literally, right in front of you while others sneak behind your back or lie and sleep up in a tree.

After a while, fruits, a scanner, a music player and light globes are also unlocked. These can be used in different ways to interact with the environment; Tauros rise when hit by a ball of light, Bellossom dances as you play your pipe, while Pikachu is more than happy to devour the apples you throw away. The apples can also be used to, for example, put Squirtle in the water, or attract a shy Emolga.

To get the images that are requested, it is important to figure out what effects each object has on the different pocket monsters, and sometimes also on different occasions. If you do not care about maximum points and perfectly taken pictures, it is a pleasant and cozy journey in colorful environments, where the most hectic moments are to have time to mark the icons that adjust the predetermined route a bit.

That was fun, wasn’t it? Sesa, do it again now!

Unfortunately, shooting becomes unnecessarily repetitive as you are forced to replay the tracks over and over again to unlock new content. For example, you should photograph each Pokémon in four different actions, such as sleeping and eating, but only one photo of each pocket monster can be submitted per turn. If you are good and manage to take three or four actions in one round, it does not matter – you still have to take additional tours to take the photos again. That the route of the course and the actions of the monsters change a bit when a certain number of points have been collected is a small consolation.

The same applies if, for example, you are going to take a photo of something specific but miss it, or fail with a desired interaction because the control was a mess – then you just have to start the round again. Since the photo rounds are only a couple of minutes long, it is not a huge problem, but it hinders the repetitive feeling.

A bigger problem is that it can sometimes be unclear what to do to get ahead, especially for younger players because everything in normal Nintendo order is explained in English. Many tasks are completed during normal play, but on some occasions we had to play through the course to even understand what was to be done. Another time, due to a bug, we had to replay a course even though the goals were actually completed.

Maximize the score

As I said, New Pokémon Snap is generally an easy and relaxing experience, but for those who want more challenge, you can dig into each level to chase points records, snap the perfect pictures, and complete special missions. It’s still all about taking photos at the right moment, but for more advanced results, you often need to interact with multiple Pokémon at the right time.

If the card is approved and the points awarded are determined by an artificial intelligence, an intelligence that does not always do the right thing for its name. It should be said that the assessment is logical for the most part, but at the same time it is not uncommon for totally unsuccessful images to receive top marks while (in our eyes) good images are sawn.

Another problem is the clumsy steering which is not very suitable for precision. Hitting the right object in the right way at the right time is not always easy. Add to that that the assessment can sway, and a lot of effort can be put into a photo that Professor Autocracy’s shrugs.

Photoshop fixes the steak!

Completely wasted, however, is not the hassle, because through the game you can upload your photos to a photo book online for the admiration of others. Either the unedited result of your trigger finger or an embellished variant. On the one hand, it is possible to adjust light and contrast, and on the other hand, it is possible to change larger details such as zooming in and out or correcting, so that the pocket sample is more centered in the photo.

You can even add fun eyes, stylish filters and a variety of decals to beautify your image. Or make it huge for that matter. A successful transfer of all photo filters that many mobile apps are proud of, quite simply.

A mini game on steroids

On the other hand, it does not matter much if photos are hailed or sawn. Above all, New Pokémon Snap is a calm and relaxing experience that does not make great demands. The tempo is low and it is not possible to make a mistake that has a more negative consequence than that the round must be replayed.

If you want to play more seriously and chase records, there are fairly large conditions for that, even if chance and awkward controls play a little too big a role. Fortunately, it’s often easy to overlook illogical judgments and instead have fun looking for secret interactions and trying to capture instantaneous events in the camera’s shutter. For a while anyway.

Because whether we are reclining on the couch and filming half at random or sitting in full swing in search of the perfect image, we can not shake off that New Pokémon Snap feels like a glorified bonus mode for a more complete adventure. This is not to say that the game does not entertain, because it does, but due to the limited and in many ways underdeveloped layout, this is above all something for those who are already Pokémon fans.
