Intel reveals the truth about x86 CPU vulnerability

Introduction: The current CPU processors are extremely complex. There are dozens or even tens of billions of transistors inside, and some problems are inevitable. Current CPU processors are extremely complex, with dozens or even tens of billions of transistors inside, and some problems are inevitable. In 2018, two major vulnerabilities, such as ghosts and fuses, caused Intel to burn out. After all, they were the world’s highest CPU manufacturers. These CPU vulnerabilities are generally called Common Vulnerability and Exposures (CVE), but different CVEs have different degrees of impact on security, and there are very few CVEs that seriously affect security. Intel recently released its 2019 CPU Security Report, announcing the four major security technologies they have adopted, including program isolation, virtual machine and container isolation, full memory encryption, and platform firmware protection/repair. In addition, Intel also shared some small knowledge about CVE vulnerabilities. For example, a total of 236 CVE vulnerabilities were found in 2019, but half of the CVEs were only moderately hazardous, only 81 were high-risk and only 4 were severe… Of these vulnerabilities, 61% of CVE vulnerabilities were actually discovered internally by Intel. Among them, 61% of high-risk vulnerabilities and 76% of serious high-risk vulnerabilities were discovered by the Intel team. Of the 76 vulnerabilities exposed externally, actually 76% were found by Intel’s bounty program. In this way, the percentage of CVE vulnerabilities that are actually discovered by external independent teams is very small. More importantly, although there are 236 CVE vulnerabilities, not CVE vulnerabilities are related to CPU hardware, 112 of which are software vulnerabilities, 59 are related to firmware, and 52 are related to software
