FritzOS 7.20: Huge update for your FritzBox
It’s time for an update. No, not on your smartphone, but on your DSL connection. Because if you use a FritzBox from AVM on this, you can now benefit from new firmware. And that brings with it some improvements and innovations.
It took a little while, but now it’s here: the next big update from AVM. If you use a FritzBox router at home in your WiFi network , you may soon be able to look forward to various new functions based on FritzOS 7.20. A first DSL router can now be equipped with the new firmware. Also a first WiFi repeater. What is new? We’ll tell you.
FRITZOS 7.20: AVM PROMISES OVER 100 INNOVATIONS
The focus in the development of FritzOS 7.20 was, among other things, to enable more convenience in the administration of Internet settings. The new “Performance Mesh Steering”, for example, improves the WLAN connections of mobile devices. In addition, the improved auto channel selection of the FritzBox now also takes into account the WLAN environment of the connected mesh repeaters. This automatically selects the best WiFi channel for the entire WiFi mesh network and no longer just for the FritzBox alone.
If you have a practice or a café, for example, you can set up WiFi access for your guests even more securely with FritzOS 7.20. Because at the WLAN guest access it is now possible to activate a public WLAN hotspot , in which the data is transmitted in encrypted form using “Enhanced Open / Opportunistic Wireless Encryption” (OWE). You no longer need access data for your guest access, promises AVM.
And if you use a FritzBox that is particularly powerful – AVM gives the FritzBox 7590 and FritzBox 6591 Cable as an example – you can benefit from a WLAN boost in certain circumstances when it comes to data transport. Because these WLAN routers are now able to use 160 MHz wide radio channels. The result: data in the 5 GHz band can be transported even faster in conjunction with compatible end devices.
MORE SECURITY IN THE WIFI NETWORK
And AVM has also extensively improved WLAN security on your Internet excursions. The new WPA 3 encryption standard can now be used. New security standards for telephoning (for example TLS and SRTP for encrypted voice transmission in the Deutsche Telekom network ) and the encrypted resolution of domain names (“DNS over TLS”) for more protection when surfing the Internet are also part of FritzOS 7.20.
Further improvements: You can now switch an Internet lock on or off for selected devices with one click. This function is conceivable, for example, for children’s smartphones. The FritzBox models 6591 Cable and 6660 Cable have the DVB-C streaming feature as an extra to transmit free-to-air cable TV stations at home via WLAN. And if, for example, you use VPN connections between your home and the office via your FritzBox, the FritzBox 7590, 6660 Cable and 6591 Cable are now available with a transmission speed that is almost three times as fast.
AVM has announced another upgrade for the FritzBox 7590, 7530 and 6890 LTE models. In the future they will support ” VDSL Long Reach”. A real advantage if your DSL connection is further away from a distribution box. Because after the update to FritzOS 7.20 you can look forward to higher download rates. However, only if your network operator also supports “VDSL Long Reach”. This is currently not the case, for example, at Deutsche Telekom.
UPDATE FOR YOUR SMART HOME
Another aspect that was taken into account in the latest FritzOS update: a completely renewed FritzBox user interface for the smart home pages. The aim of AVM was to be able to better control and manage the increasing number of smart home devices in the home network.
If you use a FritzFon, you can set nine new ringtones from FritzOS 7.20. The smart phone book of your FritzFon also suggests suitable phone book entries while entering the number. And: From now on, the FritzFon shows you the temperature of compatible smart home devices on a new start screen – such as FritzDECT 301 or FritzDECT 200/210 .
THESE FRITZ PRODUCTS ARE THE FIRST TO RECEIVE THE FRITZOS UPDATE
Over the coming weeks, many AVM products will gradually receive the update to FritzOS 7.20. AVM has already given the go-ahead for two first products. On the DSL router side, the latest FritzOS version is now available for FritzBox 7590 users to install. And users of the FritzRepeater 2400 can now also download it.
