The main symptom by which COVID-19 can be diagnosed in the early stages is a sudden loss of smell. This is stated by an article by American scientists published in the scientific journal Laryngoscope Investigative Otolaryngology, reported on the website Eurekalert

“COVID-19 is determined by a rather unique combination of nasal symptoms: a sudden loss of smell, also known as“ anosmia ”in the absence of nasal congestion,” said one of the authors of the study, associate professor of the Department of Otolaryngology and Surgery, Faculty of Medicine, University of Cincinnati (USA) and a doctor UC Health Ahmad Sedagat.

According to him, with such symptoms, the patient must be immediately isolated and checked for infection with coronavirus.

“COVID-19 is not associated with symptoms that are commonly associated with a viral cold, such as nasal congestion or mucus formation. It also makes it easy to distinguish COVID-19 from seasonal allergies, ”the scientist explained.

The findings of the scientists are based on the results of 19 studies that describe sinus and nasal disorders during infection with coronavirus. The published article also mentions a recent study by Parisian doctors Dominic Salmon and Alain Corre. This study showed that in a group of 55 patients with a loss of smell without nasal congestion, 94% of the subjects tested positive for COVID-19.

At the end of December 2019, an outbreak of a new coronavirus infection occurred in the Chinese city of Wuhan, then the virus began to spread in other countries. On March 11, the World Health Organization (WHO) described the spread of coronavirus in the world as a pandemic.

According to Johns Hopkins University, on April 15, more than 1.98 million people were infected with the new coronavirus in the world, more than 126 thousand people died, more than 493 thousand people recovered.
