Coronavirus disease continues to spread in 2019, but Brazil’s first-line medical staff, whether public or private medical systems, lack personal protective equipment. As many as 15% of the more than 2,200 confirmed cases in Brazil were medical staff.

According to the Brazilian Federal Council of Nurses (Cofen), there are about 2.2 million paramedics in Brazil, mostly women. Many caregivers have been infected with new coronaviruses at work due to lack of protective equipment and have been forced to quarantine.

The Brazilian Ministry of Health updated the report today, accumulating a total of 2201 2019 confirmed cases of coronavirus disease (COVID-19, commonly known as Wuhan pneumonia), an increase of 310 cases from yesterday; 46 death cases, an increase of 12 cases from yesterday.

Of the 2201 confirmed cases, about 60% were concentrated in the southeast and 15% were paramedics; of the 46 deaths, 40 were in the state of São Paulo and 6 in the state of Rio de Janeiro.

As recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO), the Brazilian Ministry of Health recommends that medical staff wear masks when they are in contact with patients or suspected cases of coronavirus disease; however, in the face of this serious and special infectious pneumonia, medical staff should also use anti-epidemic clothing, Gloves and goggles to prevent infection.

In recent days, many Brazilian medical workers have begun to protest on Facebook and Twitter and other social media, comparing images of protective equipment used by medical workers in other countries and Brazil.

A nurse at the Federal University Hospital in Sao Paulo was infected with the virus during screening of suspected cases and is now quarantined at home, unable to contact her husband, young daughter and mother, and cannot work in the hospital.

The nurse complained: “We take care of others in the hospital, but no one takes care of us.” For her, the lack of protective equipment should not be, and the feeling of being ignored is even more chilling.

Another medical staff member also complained on social media that he was abandoned by the passenger because he was wearing a white bus and asked him to stay away to avoid transmitting the virus to others.

The crisis management committee of Brazil’s Federal Nurses Association supervised Walkirio Almeida pointed out that the lack of personal protective equipment has a long-standing problem, but during the period of the new coronavirus pandemic, the problem will increase.

Aimeda pointed out that all states in Brazil have problems with nursing personnel owing personal protective equipment.

The Sao Paulo state government announced that prisoners in the state’s prison system will begin producing masks to fight the epidemic. But masks are just the most basic protective equipment needed by medical staff.

Viviane Camargo Santos, São Paulo Regional Nurses’ Association inspector, explained that the new coronavirus is transmitted through droplets, and medical personnel should wear anti-epidemic gowns, gloves, masks and goggles to reduce exposure, but the reality in Brazil is far from ideal.

Faced with the spread of the epidemic, more medical personnel are needed to join the long-term battle against the disease. Aimeda urged all sectors to lend a helping hand and donate protective equipment for front-line medical personnel.
